While thousands of concerned citizens are making their voices heard in Durban (South Africa) – to advocate for more investments to combat climate change and to reduce our carbon footprint – the rest of South Africa is preparing for the annual Xmas holidays.

Usually by around the 16th of December most industries have shut down for the annual holiday break and millions of South Africans are returning to their families and home-towns to celebrate Xmas. Many South Africans will travel long distances by car or mini-bus taxi overland as this is often the most affordable or convienient way to get back to family, friends or holiday destinations. The increase of cars and mini-bus taxis on our major roads will also increase the chances of being involved in or seeing motor accidents and emergency medical incidents while travelling. The MedicAlert® Foundation of Southern Africa is working hard to encourage members to make a concerted effort to drive safely and responsibly over the holiday period. However, in the event of an accident or emergency, “MedicAlert® will speak for you when you are unable to speak for yourself”.

As your MedicAlert® bracelet is able to give the correct life-saving information to first respondents, MedicAlert® would like to encourage members to update their medical information and to purchase our new improved MedicAlert® emblems, which will ensure that first respondents are able to provide the best information in the case of an emergency.

Due to the large demand for bracelets and MedicAlert® renewals the deadline to order jewellery for XMAS is 12 December – so order your Xmas presents NOW….

The MedicAlert® Foundation of Southern Africa has partnered with Clicks2Dream which is a project that aims to create awareness and the mobilisation of resources for MedicAlert®’s Uncedo Project, which provides membership to vulnerable children in South Africa who are in need of our support. Poorer communities have the highest ratio of children living with Epilepsy and Diabetes who are participating in sport. MedicAlert® would like to give these children the chance to live their lives to the fullest and reach their potential by empowering them and their families or carers with peace of mind, and first respondents with the much needed life-saving information in the case of accident or emergency.

In South Africa there are more than one million children living in extreme poverty and in child-headed households. These children are badly in need of our support.

Support a vulnerable child…. For more information visit www.medicalert.co.za

The explosion of diabetes is happening worldwide; and developing countries like South Africa are the hardest hit as those most at risk are predominantly traditional communities which are undergoing rapid lifestyle and cultural changes due to modernisation. Recent research by the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that approximately 4-6 million people in SA are living with diabetes, and that most of these people are unaware that they are suffering from this condition. This research also predicts that by 2026 (15 years) the number of South Africans suffering from diabetes will have tripled.

There is no such thing as ‘mild’ diabetes. Diabetes is always serious. If it is left untreated or is not well managed it could result in a variety of complications. Heart disease, blindness, and kidney disease are some of the complications. With early diagnosis, patient education on all facets of the condition and with special emphasis on diet, medication and exercise these complications can be delayed and even be prevented, dramatically reduce the cost of diabetes care, as well as reduce serious diabetes-related complications.

Pharmacists, particularly those practicing in community, hospital or managed healthcare settings play a vital part in advising and educating patients how to manage diabetes and reduce complications. It is also important to wear an identification emblem at all times especially if an emergency arises; just one phone call can give the first responder access to all medical details allowing timeous response and action that could be lifesaving.

Since 1964 MedicAlert® has been protecting people throughout South Africa from tragic and fatal mistakes in emergencies with their world-renowned MedicAlert® emblem. Speedy and efficient medical care especially in emergency situations is essential to saving lives. Emergency Medical Services, paramedics, nurses, doctors and other health professionals are often forced to take critical decisions under difficult circumstances and in most cases without access to all the information they would like to have.

By being a MedicAlert® member and wearing a MedicAlert identification emblem one call could save a life! In an emergency it may be just as vital to know who the next of kin is as it it to know the medical details.

This explosion of diabetes is happening worldwide; and developing countries like South Africa are the hardest hit as those most at risk are predominantly traditional communities which are undergoing rapid lifestyle and cultural changes due to modernisation. Although all groups are affected, people born of Indian descent are more likely to develop diabetes as they are born into a gene pool that makes them unusually susceptible to diabetes.

Research has shown that patient education and motivation can dramatically reduce the cost of diabetes care, as well as reduce the risk of serious diabetes-related complications. It is of the utmost importance that precautionary measures are in place if you are a diabetic i.e. if you are currently taking insulin medication, a family member or friend should know how to give you a Glucagon injection. It is also very important to wear an identification emblem at all times, especially if an emergency arises; just one phone call can give the first responder access to all of your medical details allowing timeous response and action that could be lifesaving.

Have you ever thought about or considered organ donation before?

Organ donation is about far more than just giving up an organ. When you agree to be an organ donor, you can give a critically ill person the chance to have a life that was never possible before.

There are currently 3 500 people in South Africa waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, however there is a massive shortage of suitable donors. When you visit the Organ Donor Foundation’s website, you will be able to access vital information regarding organ donation. Once you know what Organ Donation is all about, you will know that your donation can make a difference, so discuss it with your family and then register today to save a child’s, a mother’s or a father’s life. You never know: that person may be someone close to you…

Because of the Organ Donor Foundation, Marguerite Oelofse (23) was the recipient of a new heart, and now has a “second chance” at life which she says she “intends to lead with the true dignity and intention of its meaning”.

Marguerite Oelofse tells us her story, “six years ago I was fortunate enough to undergo a heart transplant that saved my life! Tests had revealed that my heart was enlarged and that the muscles had thickened which (the doctors told me) was resulting in my blood not being properly pumped throughout my body. I was dying and I needed a new heart! After 10 years of pain and struggle, I was finally blessed to receive a suitable heart donation. In the capable hands of Dr Susan Vosloo – who specializes in transplants for younger patients in Cape Town – I received miraculous intervention; and my second chance at life”.

“I am now 23 years old and a healthy young woman. I can proudly stand here today and share my passion for life – my second chance at this beautiful journey – knowing that it wasn’t always like this; I once couldn’t breathe without assistance”.
